>>Have you used a CD-R drive?<<

Yes, I use a Yamaha CRW 4260tx 6x read, 4x write, 2x re-write drive. It is simply wonderful. No coasters yet.

>>the CD-R is just too slow.<<

Well, I really don't know about that. Burning at 4x speed, we burn Hundreds of MB of files in minutes. These files are instantly readable by virtually every computer (and CD player for that matter) under the Sun. This is technically 100% media penetration/translation.

What's more, is that using Multisession, we use one 0.49› TDK CD-R disc to backup new files at the end of every day. This one single disc lasts us days before filling up. This data will then last in archive for theoretically decades.

Finally. Someone explained the difference between slow archival devices vs faster removable storage. I don't post to this certain person nor do I respond to his. I have 2 friends that have cd-r drives and we use the barter system. I give them extra media since its so cheap and they make me copies of what I want. Like I tell them, I don't have to own a CD-R, just have to know someone who does :-). BTW, if I'm not mistaken CD-RW can't be read in DVD's. So the CD media will be around awhile but the DVD will evolve to be re-writable. Thats after the same progression the CD had, 2x/4x/..32x.
We are now at DVD2. Of course as most people don't realize that software isn't written to utilize the full capabilities of 32x. I think most games are written to utilize up to like 20x, but I'm not positive of this.

BTW, those friends with CD-R's tend to moan if I asks for several CD's to be copied due to the speed, Thats why I have to bribe them.
