There was a BBC serial called The Survivors which used the premise of a near-complete plague spreading from a Chinese war lab accident. Within a month or two, England became a country of a few thousand. And the shortwave radio bands fell totally silent. Scary, no? The opening credits gave a very concise visual summary of how it happened. I turned it into fifty words.
If I had to guess, I'd say viral. More infectious.
