OT - My First Alaska Adventure When I was in college back in 1980, I flew up to Anchorage in mid-August and hitchhiked out to the Kenai Peninsula. Midway through the trip I hiked up to Crescent Lake, where I caught a 2-pound grayling on my first cast. The next day I climbed the mountain cradled between the arms of Crescent Lake. Just as I reached the summit, two ravens flew past and croaked "Never More". Lo, I did not heed this warning, for on the way down I glissaded the wrong snow chute. As my speed increased, to my horror I suddenly realized that the chute terminated at the yawning edge of a chasm. Frantically digging in my heels, I was able to stop on a nubbin of rock sticking up from the snow, just short of launching into the abyss. Had it not been for that bit of rock, my bones would now be moldering amidst the devil's club and columbine, mourned only by the lonesome whistle of the marmot. Such is the foolishness of youth...
