I live in a small town in Virginia which WAS...! served by Cox cable. Having read somewhere that Cox customers have access to @HOME, I called the cable company to find out if I can get @HOME though did not expect that we will have the service available in the area. To my surprise I found out that they have been bought by Adelphia (never heard the name before), and even more surprising I can get a service called Power Link for $35/mo which for the time being is only one way and hence requires a telephone line as well (27 megabit high-speed cable downstream path and a telephone modem return path - allowing Internet access at speeds up to 50 times faster than through a typical 28.8 Kbps phone modem). They also claim that they have two ways service in some areas, meaning that they have access to the technology.

So far I was under the impression that @HOME and Road Runner were the only companies providing cable internet service. It looks like there are more companies jumping into the market. If others can jump in like this... what is the value of @HOME? Also any comments about the disadvantages of a one way service (other than having to keep a second phone line which I already have) would be appreciated.

Thanks.
