>>My institution, a large-ish R&D facility, has anointed a certain configuration of Micron PC as the standard for new purchases, and it contains an internal zip.<<

Does this Micron also have a floppy and a CD-Rom drive?

If so, then your machines are compatible with virtually 100% of other computers out there. If it only has a Zip, then it is only compatible with about 5% of computer setups.

Also, I am suprised your department has not taken advantage of the CD Burner revolution yet. A CD Burner is the perfect compliment to an audio/music setup, as audio CD's can be burned right then and there, making your sound files universally readable by all other computers and CD players.
