The code name for the next-generation microprocessor Intel Corp. is developing
with Hewlett-Packard Co. is Merced, which is the name of a river and a town
in California's San Joaquin Valley. Merced will be based on Intel's new IA 64
microarchitecture design and will feature an instruction set that can run X86 and
PA-RISC code, according to Jim Turley, an analyst with MicroDesign
Resources Inc., Sebastopol, Calif. The Merced won't be available until late
1998, Turley said.-J.C.
