It dawns on me that Britain is Socialized and therefore the following article doesn't surprise me. (COMTEX) B: Viagra may cost British state health system a billion pou B: Viagra may cost British state health system a billion pounds a year LONDON, July 8 (AFP) - The impotence drug Viagra could cost the British state health system a billion pounds (1.64 billion dollars) a year, or even more if it is abused by couples seeking sexual pleasure, doctors have warned. A Viagra prescription for each of the one in 10 men in Britain who are impotent could swallow up a fifth of the National Health Service's 5.5 billion pound budget for drugs, the British Medical Association's annual conference in Cardiff was told. Derek Machin, a urologist in Liverpool, warned that Viagra would become a "major drug of abuse". "There is no test to prove the individual is impotent. There will be an awful lot of people who don't have a problem but their sexual function will be enhanced by the drug. "Because there is no way of knowing which people are impotent and which are not there will be abuse in obtaining the drug and use of the drug," he said. The government has promised that Viagra would be available on the NHS if it was cleared by safety bodies. The impotence drug is expected to receive a license in Britain in September. Viagra, made by US group Pfizer, has been hailed around the world as a wonder drug for impotent men, though it is not without risk. The conference unanimously passed the doctors' motion calling on the government to set guidelines on new expensive drugs such as Viagra, amid fears that plans to make Viagra available only through prescription could overburden doctors' workload. hm/bm *** end of story ***
