PALO ALTO, Calif. (Dow Jones)--Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Internet Explorer browser saw its share of the market grow 10% in the past six months to 45.6%, according to a new study.
During the same January-to-June period, Netscape Communications Corp.'s (NSCP) Navigator browser lost 8.9% of its market share to 52.2%, said Adknowledge Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif.
Meanwhile, for the first time, the use of Explorer eclipsed Navigator on Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system, which comes with Explorer, said the maker of Internet ad management software.
Adknowledge said it assembled the browser data in a one-day survey of ad viewing at 1,000 Web sites. The June 10 study noted which browsers were used to download 10 million Web pages.
A similar study was done on Jan. 9 and showed Netscape with 61.1% of the market and Explorer with 36%.
The study is more evidence of the continued erosion of Netscape's market share as Microsoft continues to move aggressively into the market. Netscape officials had said in April that Navigator's market share was 56.6% in March, a slight uptick from February.
The study also showed that computer owners are making use of newer versions of both browsers. They study found that 94% of online viewers are using versions 3 or 4 of the software.
