To all on the WIND RIVER Thread:

I apologize for my lack of postings this year. I have been following the thread closely for the past few months, but my discussions with WIND RIVER have kept me from posting here.

After months of discussions, I have been offered a position with the WIND RIVER marketing team. I will be moving to the Bay Area to start work this week, and hopefully will be in the new corporate headquarters by Jan. 1999 (construction looks great by the way). I have learned a tremendous amount over the years from Allen and others in this virtual community. Rest assured, most of the people at WIND read the thread every day (as we know from Jerry's occasional comments).

Embedded Systems are about to enter an explosive new era. Embedded products are rapidly developing beyond microcontrollers into full fledged you communications devices. The internet has revolutionized the way businesses of all sizes are thinking about networks, and embedded controls are playing an ever increasing role. The Zinc acquisition demonstrates the need for GUI capability, as well as highlighting the unique requirements of the embedded space.

WIND RIVER understands this space. WIND RIVER deals with the customers and issues on a daily basis. And because of this understanding, WIND RIVER continues to craft visionary solutions long before the competition.

To be certain, WIND RIVER has a lot of challenges ahead of itself. The market gyrations in the stock price suggest that uncertainty in this fast paced industry continues. Like us, the market is grappling with the growth rate of the industry, the adoption of i20, share growth through option grants, and the Microsoft presence. But despite these growing pains, WIND RIVER is extremely well positioned to dominate this industry: WIND's royalty based business model is sublime. Ron Abelmann and the management team are top notch. They actively lead the company, rather than play catch-up to the market.

The marketing group, under Curt Schacker's leadership, is seizing the initiative and attacking the embedded space. Many important vertical markets are taking shape, and WIND RIVER is targeting important opportunities within each of them. Semiconductor manufacturers are starting to realize that their product is only one piece of an embedded solution. Without software tools, robust RTOS, and targeted reference platforms, semiconductor products will not deliver on the promise of silicon. WIND RIVER stands at the epicenter of this industry, and is in a fantastic position to help steer the development of embedded systems. I am very excited about the chance to become part of such a world class organization.

I am also a little bit sad that I will no longer be able to post here. This thread is a valuable source of information, not just for potential investors, but for company insiders and customers as well. In order to keep the thread the objective, valuable dialogue that it is, WIND has a company policy against posting (Jerry Fiddler excepted of course).

But I urge everybody else to continue to read, post, question, and learn. This thread is special, not just in it's attachment to WIND RIVER, but in its quality of thought and discussion. I read and post on a number of other SI threads, and I assure you, none of them are in the same ballpark. Keep up the good work.

Best Regards,

Jason Cogan
