High-Quality DVD Movies Coming to a PowerBook G3 Screen Near You
Apple's New DVD-Video Kit Allows PowerBook G3 Series Customers to View DVD Movies
NEW YORK, MACWORLD EXPO, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Extending the advanced multimedia capabilities of its Pentium-toasting PowerBook G3 series, Apple Computer, Inc. today introduced the PowerBook DVD-Video Kit. When combined with a PowerBook G3 series system, viewers can now experience the superior quality of digital video and audio playback of DVD-video titles wherever they are.

''This new DVD-Video Kit lets us offer PowerBook G3 users cool new software that enables them to view the latest movies wherever they are,'' said Phil Schiller, vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. ''DVD is the next leap in storage and multimedia technology. The huge storage capacity of the DVD format combined with the high-performance PowerBook G3 will provide customers with an incredibly rich viewing experience.''

Apple's new DVD-Video Kit will allow PowerBook G3 series customers to take full advantage of a new DVD-Video standard for viewing full-length movies. The kit includes:

PowerBook DVD-ROM module -- a hot swappable, second generation PowerBook DVD-ROM module capable of reading CD-ROM discs, including CD-R, CD-i, PhotoCD, and audio CDs, as well as DVD-ROM discs;
PowerBook DVD-Video PC Card -- provides high performance MPEG-2 decoding technology to deliver full screen, 30 frames per second playback, in addition to a quality audio experience via synchronized decoding of Dolby Digital audio;
Apple DVD Player software -- based on Apple's award winning QuickTime 3 technology, the software gives customers easy access to basic functions like start, stop, and play, in addition to advanced features such as progressive slow motion, step frame, language preferences, subtitles, and multiple angle viewing. Customers access features via an intuitive orb-shaped onscreen controller, menu commands or keyboard shortcuts.
Because the PowerBook G3 series features built-in video out, S-Video out, and audio out jacks, customers can extend their DVD-Video experience even further by connecting their PowerBook G3 to an external monitor, TV, and Dolby Pro Logic sound system.

To help new PowerBook owners start to build their DVD-Video library, Apple has worked with NetFlix Inc. and DVD Empire -- two Internet-based vendors of DVD titles. NetFlix and DVD Empire will provide special limited-time offers to new PowerBook DVD-Video Kit owners for discounted purchases and free rentals. These special limited time offers are described on Apple's new DVD website (www.apple.com/dvd).

''Apple has long been focused on giving its customers the ultimate machine for multimedia,'' said Marc B. Randolph, president and CEO of NetFlix.com. ''We are excited that Apple recognizes the value of the electronic rental business model in making entertainment more accessible. We believe this partnership will make that customer experience even richer, by ensuring that every Macintosh owner is only a mouse click away from every DVD movie, to buy or to rent, on the Internet.''
