COHERENT COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS CORPORATION SETS NEW SALES RECORDS FOR PRODUCT LAUNCH
(Ashburn, VA) -- Coherent Communications Systems Corporation (NASDAQ; CCSC) generates over $17 million in new orders following mid-June product launch.
In the few days remaining in the second quarter, ended June 30, 1998, following a mid-June product launch, Coherent's EC DuoT 8000 Wireless Echo Canceller with noise reduction has accumulated more than $17 million in new orders, making it the most successful product launch in the history of the Company. Buyers are planning their own promotional campaigns for the prime Fall selling season around the improved cellular voice quality that they will be able to deliver with this new product and have requested confidentiality prior to their announcements. The driving factor behind the EC Duo 8000's success is the ability to deliver considerably superior voice quality by removing much of the acoustic echo and noise that is picked up by the cellular handset. This latest advance in Coherent's technology moves the quality on a cellular call much closer to that provided by a wired handset. This enables cellular service operators to deliver a significantly differentiated service, which gives them one more tool to help reduce customer churn.
Coherent's new echo canceller has been subjected to intensive real-world tests over a 3-month period, highlighting the EC Duo 8000's performance advantage. Cellular operators recognized the quality and operational advantages of using Coherent's echo canceller platform as the basis for a wide range of voice quality-enhancing features. Installing EC Duo 8000s with Coherent's new Sculptured Soundr level control and noise reduction capabilities puts mobile call quality on a level with wireline networks for the first time. As well as delivering exceptional acoustic echo cancellation performance, the new technology overcomes the problem of background noise on mobile calls, using state of the art digital processing techniques to remove background noise and enhance the voice quality during a call. In addition, the EC Duo 8000 echo cancellers are supported by Coherent's proven c/morT network management system for highly efficient operation.
Dr. Charles W. K. Gritton, Coherent's Chief Technology Officer, commented on the sophisticated capabilities of the EC Duo 8000: "The EC Duo will provide the voice quality edge that wireless operators are looking for. As the wireless market matures and cell coverage is attained, their chief concern is to retain customer loyalty and, without doubt, voice quality is the key factor in this battle. We are confident that with Coherent's technology, they will gain a very real competitive advantage."
Coherent's EC Duo 8000 provides a unique combination of capabilities, contained within a highly efficient and cost-effective package. Coherent's latest echo canceller uses advanced HDRP (High Density RISC Processor) technology for superior echo control on both PSTN (hybrid) and mobile (acoustic) echo paths, providing a universal solution for wireless echo control applications. The EC Duo 8000 sets new standards for bi-directional echo cancellation, incorporating the ability to optimize voice quality at both ends of the call across a digital wireless network. It can be installed in place of any of Coherent's range of hybrid or acoustic EC-6000 or EC-8000 single-ended cancellers, without the need for any shelf re-wiring. It provides a versatile platform for a range of additional software-based functionality, including Coherent's Sculptured Soundr level control and noise reduction capabilities.
Sculptured Soundr level control enables users to exercise intelligent bi-directional level control - levels are monitored simultaneously and automatically in each direction, with independent adjustment for optimum system performance. A key benefit of the software is its ability to overcome level variations resulting from handset differences and between analog and digital loss plans in mixed networks. Sculptured Soundr noise reduction overcomes the inherent problem of background noise on mobile calls, using state of the art processing techniques to remove background noise and enhance the voice quality during a call. This powerful tool provides cellular service operators with a sophisticated means of achieving comparable quality to wireline services.
Management of the EC Duo 8000 is facilitated by Coherent's c/mor system, which enables operators to configure newly-installed or existing equipment quickly and effectively from remote locations or from a centralized network management center. With c/mor, operators have complete remote control of multiple echo canceller sites, with customized monitoring and tracking features to provide the degree of monitoring flexibility their operation requires. Alarm notifications, active speech signal level monitoring, and detection of voice/non-voice signals contribute to a powerful and comprehensive management package.
