U.S.-based Tellabs Inc. and Lucent Technologies Inc., are looking to acquire extra networking expertise.

Three Newbridge Networks Corp.
directors, including former
vice-chairman Peter Sommerer, are
leaving the Newbridge board in a
move that analysts suggest could be a
first step in selling the Kanata
networking company.

"I think Newbridge is being dressed
up for a sale," suggested Duncan
Stewart, manager of Toronto's
Navigator Technology Fund.
"Newbridge is trying to put on its
best face, and this is the sort of thing
a company would do to make itself
attractive to a bidder."

While other analysts agreed, they
wouldn't say so publicly.

Yesterday, Newbridge shares rose
$1.25 on the Toronto Stock
Exchange to close at $37.

Mr. Stewart said a number of
companies, such as U.S.-based
Tellabs Inc. and Lucent Technologies
Inc., are looking to acquire extra
networking expertise.
