Not so easily resolved

It's called economies of scale. The pricing pressures in the PC world are relentless and the survivors are those that can leverage volume to their advantage. Sun is basically a "boutique" business that needs high margin hardware sales to compensate for their low volumes. Their Merced plans are a tacit admission that SPARC's days are numbered. How nimbly they manage that transition will determine how much longer they can remain in the game. They're basically two years behind SGI in spiraling into the Wintel camp.
