The way it was explained to me is the following:

The SOR is the date the public is notified that split/dividend shares will be attached to the holdings. (set by the company)

The Xdate or divdate is the date the dividend/split shares are seperated from said holdings (set by NASD)

The Payable date is when the dividend/split shares show up in your account. (Unknown as of yet)

Now typically all this is done prior to announcing it but that is the structure from what I have been told..
