State Looks At Necessity Of Viagra

Minnesota To Decide If Impotence Drug Is Medically
Needed Before Including In Medicare Program

ST. PAUL, Posted 12:05 p.m. July 8, 1998 -- Minnesota will examine
whether Viagra is medically necessary before deciding whether to include
the impotence drug in the state's Medicaid program.

Viagra is the brand name for the first perscription oral
pill to treat impotence, which first came on the market
this spring.

The federal government has directed states to include
Viagra in their Medicaid programs. Health officials in
at least two states -- New York and Wisconsin -- say
they won't go along with the federal directive.

In Minnesota, state Human Services Commissioner David Doth says he's
prepared to resist if experts convince him Viagra is not medically
necessary.

Viagra costs about $8-$10 per pill. A committee of pharmacists and
physicians will meet in August to consider whether the drug is medically
necessary.
