AT&T and others have said that having a fiber network means little, the important thing is having customers. This sort of comment has actually convinced many that Qwest cannot fill their network with traffic and produce significant earnings. Hence the focus on earnings.

Qwest claims they can sell long distance for 2 cents a minute and make a profit, and as a customer I hope they move there aggressively.

I wonder how much money AT&T will be making at that level. But then perhaps that's why they panicked into trying to make a phone company out of TCI. That clever move will work out the same way NCR did. I'm surprised AT&T stock hasn't fallen much further. I don't think many people realize the magnitude of the costs AT&T will have to incur to provide cable phone service. A fiasco! Perhaps Qwest will buy the AT&T name in bankruptcy court.
