Dusty,

I once bought a big board stock AFTER the split was announced and BEFORE The split date. I got the split. You are correct, the SOR is for dividends.

If you had to be a shareholder of record to get the split then WHO would buy that stock until the split date? They would wait until the split. If you own the stock on the day it splits, you get the split.

What screwed this whole thing up is that MIDL changed the rules AFTER the fact re: div/split which has caused massive confusion. A split shouldn't be this hard. But we are dealing with MIDL........

Dusty,

I'm late in catching up with reading these posts, but perhaps this has been cleared up. Sounds as though Sure Trade was wrong. For all dividends -- both cash and stock, AS WELL AS splits, there are four dates, three of which are key, and have been discussed on this thread.

Announcement or declaration date.
Record date.
Exdividend or exdistribution date (known as exdate in either case).
Payment date.

Keep in mind that when talking to order takers at these brokerage firms, you may be talking to someone who may have just finished high school, and who doesn't have a brokerage background. They may not even have a Series 7 licence which is the license that qualifies an individual as a registered representative.
