NEXT-GENERATION PREVIEW WWF Warzone It's June29 article but thought someone may be interested. QBC 99, Turok2, ExtremeG 2, and now WWF adding to the Xmas bottom line. Boy what a Xmas rush it's going to be --------------------------------------------------------------- In a last ditch effort, Acclaim, with the help of Iguana, manages to pull off what looks to be one of the best wrestling games yet. June 29, 1998 1998 has or will see quite a few wrestling games coming down the pipe. And so far they have been decent efforts, most leaving something to be desired. But this August wrestling fans can look forward to what appears to be another winner from Acclaim's magic development studio, Iguana Entertainment. The backstory to this little tale is that Acclaim, who has held the WWF license for years, lost it to THQ. Yet before relinquishing their hold on the WWF, Acclaim decided to throw everything they could into WWF Warzone to go out with a bang. Did they succeed? Early indications look good. WWF Warzone is 128 megabits of wrestling mayhem. Up to four players can compete in various battles such as the Challenge match, the standard VS. mode, the Cage Match, a Weapon Match where players can bash each other with an assortment of weapons such as bottles, bell's, chairs, TV's and even the announcers table. A Royal Rumble Mode, and the Gauntlet, which is basically an endurance match. There's also a training mode which allows you to practice all of your wrestler's moves on a fighting or non-fighting opponent in various situations. A great feature, which is a mandatory requirement in today's fighting games. What about the wrestlers? Not to worry, Warzone lets you select from 16 of the WWF's top superstars including: Ahmed Johnson, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The British Bulldog, The Undertaker, Kane, Mankind, both Headbangers, Shawn Michaels, and a slew of others. Not only does each wrestler look close to his flesh-and-blood alter ego, but each wrestles in their own unique style and pulls off their own signature moves. Iguana also added a create-a-player mode. Now, when you get sick of the standard wrestlers, you can design your own. The create-a-player mode offers dozens of changeable options that allow you to get the look you want for your own king of the ring. This feature alone could arguably be worth the price of admission. Graphically, Warzone is top notch with not a hint of slowdown, even with 4 players in the ring all beating each other silly. Each wrestler also has their own theme music, which is passable, and a welcome addition to the atmosphere of the game. Vince McMahon and J.R. provide running commentary during the matches and the crowd will even shout encouragement or hurl insults at you depending on how you wrestle. Also each wrestler has a couple of taunts and remarks that they offer during the match, such as Stone Cold shouting "Oh hell yeah!" after he pulls off one of his trademark ass whippings, or the Undertaker saying "I will feast on your corpse" before he pins you. Control, which is critical to any game is not a problem with Warzone as each wrestler has a ton of moves tailored to their character, including trademark moves. Most of the moves are performed with simple button presses each having a difficulty rating which, combined with a wrestlers heath bar, determine who wins the grapples. Overall, it's a good system that seems well-balanced and doesn't detract from the fun of the game in any way. Will WWF Warzone get the belt? Judging from Iguana track record of late, I'd say they could have yet another hit on their hands when Warzone hits stores this August.
