Just got the hybrid system from Charter. I do connect with the 56K modem and receive with cable. It is a little sporadic sometimes, but there is a marked increase while surfing and downloading. I have not done much downloading yet, but the tech claims to download a 8 MB file in a minute. He could not get the system to "lock" on a cable channel during installation, but I have subsequently got it to work. I don't know what the problem was. It assigns you an IP address from the DHCP server and you have to renew the lease every day it seems like. Doesn't take but a second. I was disappointed to discover that I was getting a hybrid system and would prefer 2-way. Charter does have a 2-way system working in California and says it will be here (St. Louis) 1st or 2nd quarter next year. Overall I am happy with the speed increase. If I nix my former ISP the total increase per month is $35. $1/day for a nice increase in productivity. I have to disagree with you(Ahhaha) and say it is worth it. Granted @Home service would be much nicer. Gotta go with the best that is available.

Costs:

$35 for service (includes ISP - Earthlink)
$15 for the hybrid modem(US robotics/3com) (lease-to buy it is $200-$300)
---
$50/month

The hybrid modem is an ISA board. If you have an open ISA slot and a modem already you can get the plain cable modem and only pay $10/month to lease the plain cable modem and save $5/month.
