LONG TERM FUTURE OF EGGHEAD.COM. Software is the perfect product to peddle on the Net, since using the Net presumes you own a computer. Everyone who can possibly reach egghead.com will, at some time or another, need software. With bandwidth increasing and the availability of high speed internet accesss via AtHome or ADSL, the ability to download programs directly onto your computer from Egghead is only a few months/years away. This convenience and instant gratification is exactly what consumers want and expect. (Personally, I'm dreaming of an Egghead/AtHome partnership). This speed factor is only available to selling software -- not other kinds of products. Even a great company like Amazon can't offer this -- you still have to wait days to get your books. Personally, I always go to my local bookstore to see if they have what I'm looking for before I order through Amazon because I don't want to wait 3-5 days to get my books. But buying software on the net is not just a "new way to buy the same old thing", it's a faster, more efficient and convenient way to instantaneous download what you want when you want it. Imagine downloading a sample version of a video game or application, seeing if you like it, and getting to purchase it instantly. You'll be up an running in minutes. As CEO Orban said in his CNBC interview this past Monday, people constantly tell him, "I used to shop at Egghead." They know the brand, they trust the name, and the competition is just starting out. If Egghead.com can ride the crest of the wave (and not sit back to be moved by the tide) it can be the premiere software vendor using the premiere mode of software delivery. With that kind of foreseeable future a $16/share price is painfully cheap.
