Perhaps Compaq's senior management is making an honest mistake. I've observed many senior managers in other companies make serious strategic errors because they think they are management gods. A spin-off of Alta-Vista is a no-brainer. I have to believe it is an item that has been discussed within Compaq. Any time one corporation take over another one, everything is a potential spin-off. It is either in the works, or being stopped by a hard-headed management team. Too bad the financial press doesn't see fit to investigate.
