Michael, I know we fight about politics, but really whenever I have read your posts about specific stocks, or investing in general, I have been impressed with their wisdom. In fact, I don't know how you can be so right about one thing, and wrong about everything else (big smile on my face as I type that)!

After reading about all the fortunes that have been made and quickly lost around SI, I tend to agree with you about mutual funds. The ones I very carefully picked for my daughter, into which we dribble small amounts of money every month, are doing great. This is due not only to the principle of dollar cost averaging, but because professionals are running them, and they know more about choosing sound companies than I do, and don't let their emotions run wild. My portfolio is down about 70% in the last two years, on the other hand.

In fact, since I really cannot do much at the moment because of my nasty fall except read and try to sit at the keyboard, I spent the morning reviewing the latest Worth magazine, and their fund rankings. I agree with you that a little bit of your portfolio is fun to play with, but certainly most of it, and especially the part that is invested in foreign companies, would usually do better in high quality mutual funds over a long period of time.

Of course, if we had all known that two years ago when SI started really buzzing, we would not all know each other so well now, so I guess that is the silver lining!
