MORE INFO: HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Singapore Airlines Ltd. (P.SAL) expects to start outfitting its fleet with new video-on-demand technology by early next year, a senior executive says. Yeoh Teng Kwong, who is in charge of the carrier's inflight entertainment systems, told Dow Jones Newswires that the Wisemen system has achieved 96% reliability since the introduction of an improved version in March. The system, which allows passengers in first and business class to choose and manipulate videos on their personal screens, is still being tested in one Boeing 747-400 aircraft. 'We are developing an even higher version that has better capacity, better speed and better operational logistics,' said Yeoh. If that system proves successful when installed later this year, the carrier will start to convert its fleet in early 1998. 'By next year, at least a few aircraft will have it in place,' he said. The airline's existing Krisworld entertainment system in all classes, which offers various channels on a personal video screen, costs about US$3.5 million to install. Wisemen will cost at least US$1 million more per plane. Regarding in-flight gambling, which the carrier introduced on Krisworld last month, Yeoh said the first test was working well so far. The carrier offers video blackjack, poker and slot machines with a maximum allowed loss of US$350 per person per flight and maximum winnings of US$3,500. But it has done little to promote the new attraction so far, in part because of legal restrictions. 'There isn't that much awareness yet of these facilities,' admitted Yeoh. 'But we're looking at outfitting a second aircraft (with gambling software) in the coming weeks.'
