Paris fears that Americans may take over Eiffel Tower
By Susannah Herbert in Paris

telegraph.co.uk

THE French Government yesterday averted a national crisis of confidence
by springing to the defence of the Eiffel Tower, threatened with a
brutal transition into the hands of American managers.

The intervention came after city councillors pointed out that the
company responsible for running the Paris landmark was on the brink of
passing from French to American control.

Appalled at this threat to the defining image of Frenchness, Philippe
Dominati, a conservative councillor, said it was "inconceivable and
unacceptable" that the Eiffel Tower should be managed by Americans and
called for swift action.

His rallying cry - which taps into a deep well of French loathing for
"American cultural imperialism" - was dismissed by the French Ministry
of Finance, which insisted yesterday that the tower's owner, the City of
Paris, will always have the last say in its management.

The crisis was provoked by moves to sell the bank, Credit Foncier de
France, to an American company owned by General Motors. The bank,
largely owned by the French state, has a 50 per cent stake in a smaller
firm which has a 70 per cent stake in the Soci‚t‚ Nouvelle de la Tour
Eiffel (SNTE). The SNTE markets the tower and welcomes six million
visitors a year.

Christian Maresquier, managing director, said: "There will be absolutely
no change in the management for the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is
all about people's dreams and we intend to keep it that way."
