Hi William, you seem to have a good grasp on YHOO so maybe you could give me some comments on the following.

No matter what bullish arguments people make about YHOO, I just can't help but be a skeptic. The latest thinking is that YHOO will be come one of a handful of dominant portal sites on the web. Often times people compare the web to the emergence of TV and how a few large networks emerged in that industry. This just doesn't wash with me. In TV one must keep in mind that bandwidth was subject to regulation, that is why we saw the emergence of the big three networks. With the advent of cable and 500+ channels we are now in an age of declining viewership for the major networks and the market is increasingly becoming fragmented among specialty channels (I for one am a food and sports network addict). The scenario we are in now with cable TV seems to me to fit the Internet better than the model of the golden age of TV. No one can regulate the internet and anyone who wants to can "broadcast" at very low cost.

Having said this, I don't think YHOO can remain dominant with its existing model. Once people become more familiar with the net, they will abandon using the Yahoo site. Free e-mail ? Who cares, you get that with your ISP. Search engine ? Yahoo's sucks in my opinion. Content? Yahoo doesn't have any really. I admit yahoo was the first site I got to know when I first came online 3years ago, but hey figuring out a browser was not rocket science and soon I became frustrated at the limitations of Yahoo search. Now I never go there, nor do I pay attention to the ads even though they are apparently directed towards my interests. Speaking of ads, banner ads are about as interesting to me as as the adds I see in the subway. As a child of the TV clicker generation with an attention span of 30 seconds I can tell you that it takes a lot to get my attention. The only ads I really remember are the witty ones that you see once in a while on TV. My point is the net just doesn't have the media capicity as yet to really wow people with ads.

It all just doesn't add up for me.
