Some big news:biz.yahoo.com Thursday July 16, 11:22 am Eastern Time Metromedia plans major network expansions NEW YORK, July 16 (Reuters) - Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. announced Thursday several major network expansions to bolster services in northern California and provide clients with coast-to-coast and transatlantic connectivity. The fiber optics communications services provider said it would expand its intra-city dark fiber network infrastructure to a strategic West Coast corridor. The expansion will add the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley to its growing list of first-tiere markets in which it will offer a local fiber optic infrastructure. The planned network will more than 150 route miles, ringing the Bay Area and including many vital Silicon Valley cities, such as San Jose and Santa Clara, and downtown San Francisco. Metromedia intra-city networks are being constructed in major first-tiere markets, connecting key corporate centers, government buildings, and the major switching centers of local and long distance carriers. Metromedia also said it signed a fiber swap agreement with Fonorola Inc(FON.TO - news), a Canadian telecommunications company, and fiber swap and related agreements with Pacific Fiber Link. The agreements enable Metromedia to offer seamless connectivity to its existing fiber optic infrastructure in the Northeast Corridor and Chicago to the San Francisco Bay Area. Customers on both coasts will be able to use the company's inter-city links to connect with sites in San Francisco, Chicago, New York and London.
