BK,

Re: "BTW, if you truly believe the latter statement to be true, why are you posting on the AMAT board when you could be researching stock that won't be dead money?"

This statement sounds as if your meaning is: if you don't have a bullish viewpoint to post on this stock, please get lost...
hellooooo, these threads are meant for either bears or bulls. Further, a few weeks (like 6-8) ago, LRCX was at ~ 30, and there were so many warning bells flashing, a person needed sunglasses, but the rabid bulls refused to push the sell button (??). Go figure.

Brian: re: " FY99 eps predictions are meaningless in this opaque environment."

Did teri steal your password and post that under your name? Is this a new Brian? If that was you, it must mean we're not going to hear any more price predictions based on forward earnings estimates. (at least, not until those estimates start looking better, so the numbers turn out the way you want them to).

So, let me see if I've got this straight:
When forward forecasts are good, they're reliable.
When forward forecasts are bad, they're unreliable.

And who'se trying to expel people from the thread now?

Brian -

- no faith in analyst opinions. good place to get info about companies, but following their advice is not a good way to make money.

- the reason I am spending time on this board, and many others is to get information and ideas, which help me make projections about good longs and shorts - currently short AMAT, would be very surprised if they didn't warn on earnings and/or provide negative info about the rest of the year

- i make short and intermediate trades for the most part. AMAT may well be a good long term investment, but there doesn't seem to be any reason to be in a hurry to take a position, as it will likely continue to trend down (my opinion, of course). the problems in the industry will not disappear overnight, so there will be plenty of opportunity to get back in these stocks before the next uptrend.

Rick.
