T.A. Morgan,

Your mention of InterDigital (IDC ) for the last mile has hit a sweet spot with me . I have been following them and their plight for some time. The technologies mentioned in this forum most probably will be used to improve the already existing infrastructure in the USA which is considered to be some of the best in the world.

The new telephony infrastructure market of the future is Europe 40 % , Asia 35 % and the rest of the world making up the remaining 25 % of which the USA is included. Most of the world will never see fiber optics or infrastructure like we have because the cost figure is enormous.

Only around 10 % of the people in the world have ever made a phone call so you can see where the market is. Interdigital's consortium which includes Siemens/Samsung and as of March Alcatel plan to capture this market by offering a fixed wireless local loop (B-CDMA) , that will afford video , voice and data at ISDN speed. As the technology improves so will the speeds. Later on it will allow neighborhood roaming and eventually full roaming capabilities.

Currently Samsung who says they want to be the number three telecommunications supplier in the world by 2002 is building a trial system in the Chonqging province of China which will be finished before the end of this month. Results of this trial will be provided by Samsung before year end.

Just this week another field trial was announced by IDC and will take place this fall in Iowa. Pioneer holdings of which MCI owns a part is involved in this trial. As we know WCOM is buying MCI so this could be a golden opportunity for IDCin the USA market.

From what I have read about the cable market providing the last mile for telephony , internet access etc. there are some negatives being thrown around. Naturally the thick copper wire that cable offers provides the bandwidth but also makes your telephone line easy pickings for a tap and doesn't provide the privacy that the current individual pairs we have coming into our homes do.

There are also suggestions of using our current coppers pairs for data and having another fixed wireless phone for voice. Anyway you look at it there are a lot of options for the USA but not the other parts of the world.

The recent events that have taken place at InterDigital such as the favorable German patent decision which has brought in licensing agreements from Kyocera, Sharp and Toshiba for a combined 48 million strongly suggests many more must license and more TDMA revenues will be forthcoming.

The B-CDMA consortium of Siemens/Samsung/Alcatel have paid around 80 million in licensing revenues to InterDigital to develop this technology so as results of the trials come in as well as new TDMA licensees it will bring the much needed attention to this sleeping giant.

Should you like more info on them this is their Web site
