Does anybody trade with Datek ? New York Times, July 8 - Datek Online has postponed an initial public offering of stock because of widening investigations into its trading practices, according to a report in today's New York Times. The Securities and Exchange Commission appears to be looking into whether the firm offered customers guaranteed stock returns or ever encouraged illegal trading practices by some day traders. The report said that "it is unclear exactly which parts of the once-sprawling company are being investigated, but the inquiries cover activities as recent as 1997, when Datek had both trading and online units." In a statement made yesterday, Datek denied guaranteeing stock returns to its customers or engaging in illegal trading activity. According to the report, "Wall Street stock analysts say Datek is hoping that its profitable online operation can survive, and indeed thrive, unscathed by the investigations, making a public offering possible at a much later date."
