1) either breakout from a trendline.

Closing at a new high on decent volume (when a stock has been hovering at resistance for sometime), move was fueled by fundamental news. Second phrase is my added criteria, a techno/fundo criteria usually ensures against false breakouts unless the ANALyst or company management lied. And that they do do.
