Japan Toshiba Develops Speedy Rambus DRAM Chip

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Toshiba Corp. (J.TOS or 6502) has developed a memory chip that can transfer data roughly twice as fast as 64-megabit synchronous DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) chips, according to the Nikkei Industrial Daily's Thursday edition.

Toshiba, which plans to begin sample shipments in September, developed the 72M direct Rambus DRAM using technology licensed from the U.S. company Rambus Inc (RMBS).

Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) previously had stated it intends to start using direct Rambus chips in its personal computers in 1999.

"Rambus DRAMs will account for 50% of the global memory market by the year 2001," said a Toshiba official in charge of the company's memory research.

BEST WISHES
BILL
