New York Times, Thursday, July 9, 1998

Former Portfolio Manager At Dreyfus Placed on Leave.

"The NY State Attorney General's office is conducting an investigation into whether Mr. Schomberg, former manager of the Dreyfus Aggressive Growth fund and the Dreyfus Premier Aggressive Growth fund, personally benefited from directing the funds to buy shares of companies whose securities he owned in his personal account"...

"The SEC has also begun a preliminary inquiry into the situation...Dreyfus began its own investigation last month into the trading activities of Mr. Schomberg after a well known short seller raised questions about the funds' investments in shares of CCSI..."

"Mr Schomberg on paid leave, Dreyfus said, ...this initiative is designed to facilitate the process and to assure that Mr. Schomberg's time will continue to be devoted exclusively to this inquiry"

"The inquiry (from the NY Attorney General's office) began in December 1996 after it was learned that few investors had enjoyed the phenomenal performance of the fund....in 1996 the fund gained 82%. But most of the gains occurred early in that year...but the funds financial statement showed that it lost nearly $11 million of investors money."
