In the CPU business, you're either completely compatible with the leader, or you're out in the cold.

Tony,

One of the most successful product lines competing against Intel is the integrated Cyrix MediaGX. This product is not pin compatible with Intel, and offers OEM's a solution which Intel can not compete against. The MediaGX is used in Compaq's top selling laptop model, as well as many other desktop and information appliance type products.

Apparently the K7 will be pin compatible with Compaq's future Alpha products. This may prove to be AMD's biggest strength going into the future.

Tony, you say K7 must be plug compatible with Intel to be profitable. Xeon, is plug compatible with NOTHING, will only have sales of a million a quarter or so, yet Intel doesn't seem to have any trouble coercing, I mean getting, the motherboard makers to design motherboards.

tony, re:In the CPU business, you're either completely compatible with the leader, or you're out in the cold.

95% of computers are never upgraded with a new CPU. The design of the motherboard is totally irrelevant to the consumer. Pin compatibility is not an issue. Expansion slots are the same in Super7 as in Slot1 or Socket8 or Socket3678435 (whatever it is). PCI, ISA, AGP, thats it.
