WKOW and COMARK: Another First In Digital
10:10 a.m. Jul 08, 1998 Eastern
MADISON, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 1998--WKOW is "on-the-air" with the first full power DTV (digital television) "N minus one" (lower adjacent digital) configuration, with COMARK supplied analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC) transmitters. This makes WKOW-DT the first in the region to be "on-the-air" with DTV. WKOW owner, Shockley Communications Corporation (SCC), signed an agreement with COMARK in August of last year to purchase its future NTSC and ATSC products.

WKOW-TV27 is on the air with a NTSC ERP of 2,500kW, and WKOW-DT is operating at a DTV ERP of 172kW. Both systems are combined, using a Dielectric supplied analog/digital channel combiner, into a single common antenna. "The combiner is a prototype device, but it could have a lot of impact" stated Terry Kelly, Executive Vice President of SCC. "From our first digital signal tests, there appears to be minimal interference with (channel) 27 (NTSC). We have to do some careful electronic testing, but we are very encouraged by what we are seeing." There was no visually discernable impact to the primary CH27 NTSC signal. As well, Kelly stated that WKOW had spent the previous week talking to medical clinics and hospitals to make sure that there were not any interference or related application problems. There have been no reported problems.

Stated Jerry Chase, President and CEO of COMARK "We continue to support our customer needs to be pioneers. As a company on the leading edge of DTV, we understand the many needs of implementing digital technology, as well as the diverse market and business needs which motivate groups like Shockley to be progressive leaders. We are happy to be partners with them in their successes."

COMARK is in discussions with WKOW regarding future DTV related activities. Steve Zimmerman, Chief Engineer for WKOW stated "We hope to shortly commence with detailed testing, both in the field and at the transmission facility. COMARK and CDS (Comark Digital Services) will play an important role in helping Shockley Communications determine the future needs for our 5 stations."

SCC, which owns and operates a total of five TV stations in Wisconsin, will work closely with Comark as it makes the transition from analog to digital television. SCC is headquartered in Madison, WI., home of station, WKOW-TV27. The company also owns and operates full power stations in Rochester, Eau Claire, LaCrosse and Wausau.

COMARK Communications, Inc., a member of the ATSC, is an Emmy award winner and recognized leader in high power UHF terrestrial broadcasting. Comark Digital Services (CDS) is a division of COMARK and is helping broadcasters develop and implement successful strategies for digital television. CDS offers broadcasters a variety of services including strategic planning, consulting, systems design, innovative products and complete turnkey systems integration. COMARK is a member of the Thomcast organization, which ranks as the largest terrestrial broadcasting product and service organization in the world.

NEW YORK, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 1998--

DTV Products to be Branded SharpVision, Available Fourth Quarter 1998

Sharp Electronics Corporation, reinforcing its commitment to developing premium Digital TV (DTV) solutions, today unveiled the product specifications for its first-ever Rear Projection HDTV set (64LHP5000), along with additional details on its TU-DTV1000 DTV Decoder.

Sharp has opted to sell its first DTV products under the SharpVision brand. Both the rear projection TV and the DTV decoder are scheduled for sale in the fourth quarter 1998 and are expected to sell for approximately $9,999 and $1,999, respectively.

A series of SharpVision projectors already utilize component video inputs for direct connection to the DTV decoder. In addition, Sharp will release a line of big-screen DTV-ready sets (KX series). This line is also equipped with component video inputs and will accommodate both NTSC and DTV. Sharp's KX series was developed to complement SharpVision's DTV product line and work with the decoder.

64LHP5000 Rear Projection HDTV

SharpVision's 64" diagonal widescreen rear projector is ideal for panoramic viewing. It is equipped with multiple tuners, including an ATSC decoder which decodes all 18 different DTV broadcast modes (HDTV and SDTV). In addition, the dual NTSC tuners enable broadcast or cable reception and provides Picture-in-Picture (PIP) viewing capabilities.

SharpVision's 1080I High Definition Display receives and displays high quality HDTV broadcast resolution, a true 1080I picture, providing unsurpassed video realism. Other DTV formats, such as 720p, 480p and even 480I, are automatically converted to 1080I and provide seamless viewing of programs broadcast in different modes.

Special Digital Expansion Port

The 64LHP5000 is equipped with a digital expansion port which will enable consumers to upgrade as services and applications become available. The SharpVision expansion port will provide consumers with the confidence of knowing that their DTV purchase will remain compatible with future DTV products and services as they evolve, such as high definition cable programming and future data services.
