I remember reading a survey a few weeks back saying the average PC use has dropped from 4-5 years to 3 years currently (home user). Don't have the source though.

I think you're in the minority.

That's conceivable.

I did upgrade my PC by adding memory (twice, first 8 meg then 32) and a hard drive. I also installed Windows 95 on my own. I also installed my original 14.4 modem and replaced it with a 56K.

If I hadn't been willing to open the box, I would have have had to upgrade after 3 years, at a maximum. Of course, given my experience with my system, that would have been a waste relative to the upgrade costs.
