probart: Great story! Thanks.
I don't know about fresh water catfish, but a little trick I learned about salt water cat fish, may come in handy someday.
When you get 'stung", by the cat, I have a little remedy that really and truly works, to alleviate the sting.
Right where the fin and the body meet, it forms a "v", or maybe an 'L" is better (one of the side fins, where the stinger is) there seems to be some kind of slime that the catfish exudes.
Rub that spot directly (not onto a rag first, then the sting) on the affected spot, and it is almost instantaneous, the sting disappears.
It really works, but don't ask me why.
