Russ,
Hi!! AND WELCOME TO THE DELL THREAD....

You pose and interesting question here...Dell not getting hyped prior to earnings? Well, the one thing I can assure you is it is alot of fun....not that any of us are experts on picking the number...but, certainly we all have underestimated or overestimated Dell during the past two years...speaking for myself...I have been over the last two times...the first three or four times that I attempted to predict their earnings I really felt foolish when they blew away the number...as to whether we are influencing the hype and the run-up?...I would say that is up to your imagination...I highly doubt it...but, then I wish more would listen to what some of the great people on this thread have written and predicted...the knowledge on this thread is what really counts...not the earnings game that Patrick is kind enough to set up for all of us so we can guess...
Best, kemble

Once again, who cares about whisper numbers and whether Dell goes up a lot and down a little???
If it goes down because of not meeting "whisper numbers" then we (who can) buy more.
If not, then we celebrate longer and more jolly.
Anyway we cannot be contained, those of us (like me) who give ridiculous whisper numbers will not be deterred from doing it!!!!

Welcome to the DELL thread, Russ

... At DELL's last earnings, with all the positives and then dropping, and not beating that whisper #, I read somewhere on the net that it may have had something to do with all the talk on this thread concerning that expected # with the high expectations. ...

Interesting conjecture, especially as I was contacted and interviewed by one of the magazines (Fortune or Money, I forget) regarding the whisper number and deriving investment information from the SI forum. I think that the earnings forecasting contests that Pat has been running are a lot of fun, but, IMO, they tend to build increasingly unattainable expectations into the stock price. There are a few posters on the thread who have done a LOT of work to develop and tune spreadsheet analyses to estimate DELL earnings. Most of us just guess. As you know, most of us are positive on DELL so our estimates get to be a little euphoric or e-bull-ient sometimes. Long time posters know which of us do it conscientiously, but someone who just 'drops in' to get the sentiment and make a momentum play doesn't have any idea how our estimates are derived.
