Kaiser Sued Over Decision Not to Pay for Viagra

Oakland, California, July 9 (Bloomberg) -- Kaiser Permanente
Group, the largest U.S. health-maintenance organization, said
it's being sued by a 77-year-old man over the company's decision
not to cover the cost of Pfizer Inc.'s blockbuster impotence pill
Viagra.

The Los Angeles man, who became impotent as a result of
prostate surgery, filed the suit after Kaiser refused to pay for
the drug, said Kaiser spokeswoman Beverly Hayon. She said she
wasn't familiar with the details of the case because Kaiser
hasn't seen the suit.

Kaiser is among a group of U.S. insurers that have said they
won't pay for Viagra, which costs up to $10 a pill, because its
high cost would force them to raise premiums. Viagra, the first
pill to treat impotence, rocketed to blockbuster status within
weeks of its April introduction.

''In most cases, prescriptions for Viagra may be medically
appropriate. But the vast majority are not being deemed medically
necessary and the vast majority of Kaiser patients are paying for
Viagra,'' Hayon said.

Shares of Pfizer rose 3/8 to 113 7/8 in late trading.

Kaiser has more than 9.1 million members in 19 states and
the District of Columbia.
