I have read and enjoyed your post for years. However, I must take issue with your statement that <For starters, Craig Barrett has to beat earnings this quarter - even if he has to borrow from the next quarter.>

Front loading and borrowing from future earnings only erodes the creditability of financial statements. Financial statements are the basis of many investment decisions, especially for those who have no insider connections. I prefer to have earning statements reflect an accurate performance history. I'm surprised that the AICPA and the auditing firms endorses this practice.
