84-85 were the dark yrs in the oil patch. That was the period where the bottom fell out. It effectively killed whole cities like Baton Rouge and Houston for many years. We are not quite at those stages .....yet

Companies are much better managed today and don't have the same attitudes they had in the past. (The prevailing attitude back then was that the riches would never stop flowing). When the puppy mentions the "New York Business Types" this is one reference to that change in philosophy.

Finally, the popular bumpersticker during that period was
"Lord, Give us another Oil Boom and we promise we won't blow it again".. hopefully they are practicing what they preached from their bumpers
