News for IBM IBM's AIX Voted Best Operating System for Workstations; Beats Sun and HP SOMERS, N.Y. (July 9) BUSINESS WIRE -July 9, 1998--IBM's AIX operating system, which runs on RS/6000 workstations and servers, ranked number one in a new industry survey of UNIX and NT workstation operating systems. In voting by the people who really know -- value-added resellers who configure, install and support many different vendors' systems -- AIX finished first in seven out of eight categories. The resellers ranked IBM tops in the categories they said mattered most: Reliability, Ease of Configuration, Security, Technical Support, Management Capabilities, Ease of Installation (tied for first), and Scalability (tied for first). Overall AIX scored 58.8 followed by Hewlett Packard's UX(a) operating system (55.2), Microsoft Windows NT(a)(54.6), SunSoft's Solaris(a)(54.3), and SCO Unixware(a)(53.7). "The results of this survey demonstrate that Business Partners recognize the value of AIX on RS/6000," said Michael J. Borman, general manager, IBM RS/6000. "AIX's reliability, easy-to-use browser-based tools, and e-business capabilities are a winning combination for enterprise computing." AIX is the first OS that supports a 64-bit operating environment to be branded UNIX 98. It's also the only OS that supports a 64-bit operating environment to receive the ITSEC C2/E3 security certification, and the first server OS with Virtual Private Network certification from the International Computer Security Association. The independent study was conducted in May 1998 by VF Information Services of Langhorne, Pennsylvania for VARBusiness magazine. A VARBusiness story on the survey is available at: techweb.com . AIX and RS/6000 are registered trademarks or trademarks of the IBM corporation in the United States, other countries, or both. Other company, product and service names, which may be denoted by (a) may be trademarks or service marks of others. -0- jfc/ny* mem Contact: Jeff Gluck, 914/766-3839 jgluck@us.ibm.com KEYWORD: NEW YORK INDUSTRY KEYWORD: COMED COMPUTERS/ELECTRONICS
