As one who is currently involved in trying to solve the DLC issue with certain rbocs and independants I can tell you the following:
DLC real estate is at a premium: 8 watt, 4 watt or even 2 watt power consumption is too much. DMT,DMT lite, etc generate too much heat and eat too much power too be realistically mass deployed.
There is a technology runs at 200 mw, has a density of almost 2000 ports per 7 foot rack at the CO, goes 768kbps in both directions, can be multidropped in the home or small office, runs within the ISDN spectral masque, is virtually unaffected by bridged taps, runs simultaneous POTS without a splitter, runs on commercially available DSPs. Most of the DLC manufacturers have conceptually agreed that it is a mass deployable technology. so What's the problem you ask....? I'll bet you can already guess!
