Taiwan is giving out similar information to SEMI. Today they announced that chip demand fell off 19% in June and they don't expect a recovery until September, at the earliest. Most analysts say that Taiwan is going to start feeling the pinch if September doesn't see some demand. On the other hand, there's a lot of interest in PC hardware, and a general feeling that there will be some growth coming back in the fall.

TSMC said last month it would cut planned capital spending in 1998 by 30%. Macronix International Co. followed last week, saying it would spend only about NT$3 billion on new investments, down from an originally planned NT$11 billion.

Baird,

I'm not so sure experiencing a slow deployment of copper tools. I suspect that by fall, we will start seeing some limited production parts using Cu.
