Carl, I know what you mean... I'm a long time mutual fund investor who has had a rocky road in individual issues this year, so I've started studying TA. So far, the reading list includes:

Using Technical Analysis (Pistolese)
The TAO of Trading (Koppel)
Trading for a Living (Elder)
Technical Analysis Explained (Pring)
The Technical Analysis Course (Meyers)

I'm 1/2 way through reading my first pass. It is a lot to absorb. My biggest fear is that we end up seeing in the patterns what we want to see, not what's happening. I see examples in the books which imply the opposite of what the author is trying to show, but in an earlier part of the charts.

This is all a bit of black magic, I think. One has to immerse yourself until your 6th sense takes over based upon experience. This can cost a lot!
