OT Dennis, you asked Why are private schools more effective than public, because they have more control over their own fate. They are more efficient. The answer is that you have begged the question (i.e. assumed your conclusion that private schools are more effective). Public schools are required to take all comers. Private schools are selective in several ways. First, discipline problems are not tolerated -- students are expelled. Second, the very fact that parents are willing to spend additional money for their children's education implies that the home environment is more conducive to education than a randomly selected environment. Third, there were some studies a few years ago that showed that private school high school teachers were, on the average, less well prepared and less knowledgeable of their subject matter than their public school counterparts. The biggest problem existed in religious schools, although Catholic parochial schools fared very well. Nobody would insist that the systems we have now are perfect. Inertia is a very difficult thing to overcome. But to claim that the government has dampened economic well being of the populace is ludicrous, and that's the point with which I take strong issue. IBD and other publications are fond of making these kinds of statements, but they can never back them up with anything like proof. Proof by blatant assertion simply doesn't hack it! TTFN, CTC
