Lucent, VocalTec and ITXC Are Firmly Committed To Interoperability - Words from the CEO Tom Evslin, CEO and Chairman, ITXC Corp Our big news this issue is also good news for the whole IP telephony industry: ITXC, VocalTec and Lucent announced a three-company effort that will result in first-ever interoperability between gateways from different vendors. The plan is to have VocalTec and Lucent gateways actually "speaking" to each other on ITXC's WWeXchangeSM Service by this fall. Until now, service providers, like ITXC and its customers, who provide IP telephony services to end users have been faced with the unpleasant choice of either being limited to buying IP telephony products from a single vendor or operating wasteful, parallel equipment networks. If you are an IP telephony provider - whether a reseller, a facilities-based telephone company, an ISP, or a new Internet telephony service provider - this announcement is good news. You will soon be able to specify a second procurement source after choosing an initial gateway vendor. Moreover, ITXC can deliver your traffic to our full network of termination providers regardless of the type of origination gateway. 2. A Quick Entrance into IP Telephony Service: Sell Termination to WWeXchangeSM Service A very quick way to enter the fast growing Internet telephony industry is by operating a gateway and selling call termination by the minute as a Termination ITSP for ITXC's WWeXchange Service. Benefits Immediate Source Of Revenue No Selling Required Low Credit Risk, Low Business Risk Simple Administration Quality Standards and Requirements Not everyone qualifies to provide termination for WWeXchange. In order to become one of our providers, you need to meet stringent quality standards and minimum service levels. How to Become an ITXC Affiliate The ITXC Sales Team is currently looking for companies that are already in the communications business to terminate Internet telephony calls around the world. If your company is a facilities-based telephone company, a call-back or call-turnaround company, a wireless or cable company, a prepaid calling card company or a large ISP and already have facilities or customers, please review the Quality Standards on our web site (www.itxc.com <http://www.itxc.com> ). If your company decides to begin offering Internet telephony calls and is able to comply with these Standards, please complete and return the Application Form and our Sales and Deployment Teams will begin to work with you immediately. 4. Selecting an Internet Service Provider (ISP) Selecting an Internet Service Provider (ISP) is perhaps the most important component in providing high-quality IP voice transmission. There are many different levels of access providers, typically referred to as Tiers (i.e., their proximity to the Internet "Backbone"). Be sure that you have investigated the following areas before selecting your ISP. Backbone Interconnectivity Network Operations Center (NOC) Bandwidth 5. What to Look For In a Billing Platform Many billing software companies are considering, or are already, adding IP to their next important release. While the current billing environment is still the "traditional" telecommunications style, they are beginning to change. Originator and Terminator Billing Concerns Transaction Volume Real-time vs. Batch Gateway Integration Rating Flexibility Auditing and Revenue Integrity Features Accounting System Support/Integration Originator Billing Concerns Account Management Features Billing Cycle and Invoice Options Subscriber Fraud Management Capabilities Flexible Bill Payment Options/Integration with Credit Card Clearinghouse 6. What Are ping and traceroute Tests? ping Packet Internet Groper (ping) is a program used to test whether a particular network destination is online by repeatedly bouncing a "signal" the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request packet-off a specified address and showing how long that signal takes to complete the round trip. If you get no return signal, the site is either down or unreachable. If only a portion of the signal is returned, it indicates some trouble with the connection that will slow down performance. traceroute traceroute shows the full connection path between your site and another Internet address (note that the route to a host may differ from the route from a host). It shows how many hops a packet requires to reach the host with the time required for the packet to get to each intermediate host or router. 7.
