As a long time amateur astronomer I'll offer this guess regarding November 1998. Every year in mid-November there is a meteor shower called the Leonids because the meteors seem to streak out from a point in the constellation of Leo. Although not the most spectacular shower every year, it is famous for having a very, very strong shower through history in a more or less predictable pattern. Last very strong one was in 1966. Some are predicting 1998 or 1999 might be a very strong one. The Leonids and all other annual showers are caused by earth passing through the debris trail of a periodic comet (I forget its name). If it is a strong one the sky will look like the view through your windshield at night in a snow storm!
