Andreas,
all the MM's have to do is post bid and ask prices but there is no obligation to trade the stock at all. It is up to the outside investor at that point to create the action.

When you post unreasonable spreads between the bid and the ask, it is very difficult to find buyers. Why would anyone buy a stock and lose 20% of its value going in, unless they REALLY wanted it, or KNEW that it was going to trade well beyond that in the near future.
