Analysts at PC Data say collective retail sales figures showed a two percent drop in software sales and an 8.3 percent drop in hardware sales compared to May, 1997. ... In hardware sales, desktop PCs were hardest hit, with an 18.5 percent drop from last May. Seven of the 12 hardware categories tracked by PC Data saw steep declines during the month. Displays were down 16.7 percent, network and communications products down 9.6 percent and portable computers, down 9.1 percent. Other categories experienced smaller drops. Software and hardware sales are expected to increase again, now that Windows 98 is on retail shelves because of the wide variety of drivers and software utilities built into the operating system, and because Win98 supports new capabilities wanted by consumers in multimedia and add-on hardware arenas.
