Rob: That is a simple explanation. Specialist/Market Makers can trade against you. They not only make money on the spread, but are allowed to trade their own accounts. (IE: Selling all their shares into a rally and eventually selling short into the rally to satisfied demand. Ultimately moving the stock back down to cover and accumulate before taking the stock price backup...if that is the game plan.)
